{"id":1258,"date":"2022-04-02T19:02:42","date_gmt":"2022-04-02T19:02:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wellformedness.com\/blog\/?p=1258"},"modified":"2022-04-05T12:49:31","modified_gmt":"2022-04-05T12:49:31","slug":"dutch-names-in-latex","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wellformedness.com\/blog\/dutch-names-in-latex\/","title":{"rendered":"Dutch names in LaTeX"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One thing I recently figured out is a sensible way to handle Dutch names (i.e., those that begin with\u00a0<em>den<\/em>,\u00a0<em>van<\/em> or similar particles. Traditionally, these particles are part of the cited name in author-date citations (e.g.,\u00a0<em>den Dikken 2003<\/em>, <em>van Oostendorp 2009<\/em>) but are ignored when alphabetizing (thus, <em>van Oostendorp<\/em> is alphabetized between <em>Orgun &amp; Sprouse <\/em>and <em>Otheguy<\/em>, not between <em>Vago <\/em>and <em>Vaux<\/em>)<em>.\u00a0<\/em>This is not something handled automatically by tools like LaTeX and BibTeX, but it is relatively easy to annotate name particles like this so that they do the right thing.<\/p>\n<p>First, place, at the top of your BibTeX file, the following:<\/p>\n<pre>@preamble{{\\providecommand{\\noopsort}[1]{}}}<\/pre>\n<p>Then, in the individual BibTeX entries, wrap the <tt>author<\/tt> field with this command like so:<\/p>\n<pre> author = {{\\noopsort{Dikken}{den Dikken}}, Marcel},<\/pre>\n<p>This preserves the correct in-text author-date citations, but also gives the intended alphabetization in the bibliography.<\/p>\n<p>Note of course that not all people with <em>van<\/em> (etc.) names in the Anglosphere treat the <em>van<\/em> as if it were a particle to be ignored; a few deliberately alphabetize their last name as if it begins with <em>v<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One thing I recently figured out is a sensible way to handle Dutch names (i.e., those that begin with\u00a0den,\u00a0van or similar particles.
